Kojima’s absence from The Game Awards is further proof KONAMI want to erase him from their history

When KONAMI’s Lawyers informed Hideo Kojima not to attend last nights Game Awards in Los Angeles, they sunk to a new low, further cementing their intentions to erase the iconic developers memory from anything related to the works of the Japanese publisher.

Most of you, will by now know of the fragile and frayed relationship between KONAMI and Kojima but the manner of last nights events at the biggest game awards of the year will have certainly left a sour taste in the mouths of most associated with the video games industry. During the live event presenter Geoff Keighley, would go on to say;

“Mr. Kojima had every intention of being with us tonight but unfortunately he was informed by a lawyer representing Konami just recently that he would not be allowed to travel to tonight’s awards ceremony to accept any awards.”

When Hideo Kojima was asked to take over Metal Gear way back in the mid eighties, the game was originally intended to see players hunt and shoot down an escaped prisoner, Kojima instead opted to reverse this idea, placing players in the role of the prisoner. From that moment, his unique vision and brilliant guidance allowed for the birth of one of the most iconic and entertaining franchises in video games history to date, where Metal Gear Solid would be today without him is anybody’s guess but I can’t believe for a single second that it would be as successful.

Kojima is a passionate man who devotes and pours everything he has into creating and providing the world with eye catching and breathtaking action, with every mission The Phantom Pain had to offer, with Snakes every movement, it was incredibly evident and a pure joy to witness Kojima’s midas touch.

With KONAMI, it may very well be a simple case of ‘don’t bite the hand that feeds you’ but with their treatment of Hideo Kojima, they have once more shone a very bright light upon themselves, while attracting further negative press aimed in their direction.

I strongly believe that allowing Kojima to attend last nights ceremony would have shown some signs of positive life from within the KONAMI camp, an olive branch if you like. He deserved to attend the awards and collect any plaudits that might have come both KONAMI and Kojima’s way with MGSV: TPP, but by denying him the right to celebrate what is a truly amazing game, alongside and with his fellow peers, the famed publishers have only succeeded in lengthening the distance between the two, ultimately digging themselves a deeper hole.

Why KONAMI would want to lose someone with the amazing talents that Hideo Kojima possesses is completely mystifying to most, but to attempt to remove any vestige of his very existence from a series he made his own is not only astounding, it’s unbelievably shocking and sad.
